Yep, I clicked my red heels together, “there’s no place like home” x3, and voila (24 hours later) I arrived “back home” in Kansas City.  When I was a teenager growing up here in the midwest, I couldn’t wait to spread my wings and see the world.  And I have settled about as far from KC as you can get, and I’m thankful that I can get home every year or so to see the family.

I’ve been away long enough now (20+ years), that returning to the US seems like visiting a foreign country.  Not only do they drive on the wrong side of the road, but everything is a little different.  Professionally, I was immediately struck by how business has embraced social media.  Stepping out of the plane, into the airport at KC, the loud-speaker announced “Follow KCI airport on twitter, fan us on facebook, keep up to date with what is happening at your airport”.

WOW!

Almost everyday as I travelled through the midwest, and then the southwest, I came across businesses that had embraced the multi-channel approach to reaching their customers.  Large department stores advertising Facebook and Twitter in the store, promoting “fan and follower” only specials, shopping centres, restaurants, and golf clubs.

What is your social media strategy ?  How can you promote your business through these channels ?

Like anything new, it may take time, experimentation, and adjustment … but you have little to lose, and much to gain from reaching out to your customers and staking your place in the social media landscape.
